The basic alchemical symbol for Air is an upward triangle divided by a horizontal line, and it is exactly the opposite of the Earth symbol. Sometimes also called ‘wind’, it is associated with the breath of life, the source of life, the Holy Spirit and life-giving forces. It was assigned the properties of warmth and wetness by Plato. It is attributed to have cleansing powers, but at the same time it can become a force of destruction.

Air is assigned to the direction of East, and the season it correlates to is Spring. Colours that correspond to Air are grey and white (and also sometimes blue). In astrology the Air signs are Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius.

Air symbolizes harmony, creativity, learning, thinking, imagination, communication, intelligence, knowledge, perception, lightness and travel.
